Frequently asked
Everything you need to know before buying a personalised registration.
What is the £80 DVLA fee?
The £80 fee is a statutory DVLA charge for assigning a personalised registration onto a vehicle. It’s identical at every supplier — including buying directly from the DVLA — and is non-negotiable. The total price you see in the breakdown above already includes it.
How long does the transfer take?
Most suppliers complete the DVLA paperwork within 3–5 working days of receiving payment and your V5C details. DVLA then issues the assignment certificate by post. The plate is yours from that moment — you can then order physical acrylic plates from any registered number plate supplier.
Can I hold the plate without putting it on a vehicle?
Yes. The DVLA can issue a V750 retention certificate, valid for 10 years. You don’t need to assign it to a vehicle straight away. Most suppliers handle this for you at the same £80 fee.
Can I buy this as a gift?
Yes — most suppliers can issue the certificate in the recipient’s name and post it directly to you. Just provide their full name and address at checkout. We recommend confirming the gift recipient is happy to receive a registration before you commit, as personalised plates can’t be cancelled once assigned.
Will this plate fit any car?
Personalised plates can’t make a vehicle look newer than it actually is. Dateless plates (no year identifier) can go on any age of vehicle. Suffix, prefix, and current-style plates have a minimum vehicle age — see the Eligibility panel above for the exact date this plate is valid from.
Is PersonalReg affiliated with the DVLA?
No. PersonalReg is an independent comparison site. We aggregate live listings from the DVLA and every major UK reseller so you can compare prices in one place. When you buy, your purchase is with the supplier you choose — they handle the DVLA transfer on your behalf.
