Personalised Number Plates
The complete guide to buying, selling, and owning personalised registrations in the UK.
What Are Personalised Number Plates?
A personalised number plate (also known as a private plate, cherished plate, or vanity plate) is a vehicle registration that has been specifically chosen by the owner, rather than randomly assigned by the DVLA. These registrations can spell out names, words, initials, or simply look distinctive on a vehicle.
In the UK, personalised registrations are managed by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). They are not just cosmetic — a personalised plate is a legal vehicle registration that is recorded on the V5C logbook and tracked by the DVLA just like any other registration.
Personalised plates have been a part of British motoring culture for over a century. The very first registration, “A 1”, was issued in 1903 and remains one of the most famous plates in the world. Today, the personalised plate market is worth hundreds of millions of pounds, with plates changing hands for anything from a few hundred to several million pounds.
Why Buy a Personalised Plate?
There are many reasons people choose personalised registrations
Stand Out
A personalised plate makes your vehicle instantly recognisable and unique on the road. It's one of the few ways to truly personalise your car.
Investment
Many plates have increased significantly in value over the years. Desirable combinations, short dateless plates, and name plates have historically appreciated well.
The Perfect Gift
A personalised plate makes a memorable, lasting gift for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, or retirement. It can be held on retention until the recipient is ready.
Hide Your Car's Age
A dateless plate has no year identifier, meaning no one can tell the age of your vehicle from the registration. Popular with owners of older prestige cars.
Business Branding
Businesses use personalised plates on company vehicles for brand recognition. A clever plate is a moving advertisement seen by thousands of people every day.
Personal Identity
Whether it's your name, initials, nickname, or something meaningful to you — a personalised plate is a form of self-expression that goes everywhere your car does.
UK Number Plate Formats
Understanding the four main types of registration in the UK
Dateless Plates
1903 – 1963
Dateless plates are the oldest and most sought-after format. They have no year identifier, which means they can be assigned to any vehicle regardless of age. This makes them especially popular with owners of classic and prestige vehicles who don't want a modern registration on an older car.
- Format consists of letters and numbers only — no year code
- Shorter combinations (e.g., 1 A, AB 1) are the most valuable
- Can be displayed on any age of vehicle
- Single-digit plates are the rarest and most expensive, with some valued at millions of pounds
- Originally issued by local councils — letter combinations relate to the issuing authority
Suffix Plates
1963 – 1983
Introduced in 1963 when the original dateless system ran out of combinations. The suffix format places a year letter at the end of the registration, with 'A' representing 1963, 'B' for 1964, and so on. Letters I, O, Q, U, and Z were not used as year identifiers.
- Format: up to 3 letters, up to 3 numbers, then 1 year letter
- The final letter indicates the year of registration
- Excellent for spelling names — e.g., DAV 1D, JOH 44N, PAU 1L
- Year letter 'A' = Feb 1963, 'B' = Jan 1964, through to 'Y' = Aug 1982
- Popular and affordable entry point into personalised plates
Prefix Plates
1983 – 2001
When the suffix system was exhausted, the format was reversed. Prefix plates place the year letter at the start, followed by numbers and then letters. This system ran from 'A' in August 1983 through to 'Y' in March 2001.
- Format: 1 year letter, up to 3 numbers, then 3 letters
- The first letter indicates the year of registration
- Very popular for creating name-like combinations — e.g., M14 KES, P4 ULA
- Year letters changed every August (later every March and September)
- Wide range of prices from a few hundred to thousands of pounds
Current Style Plates
2001 onwards
The current format was introduced in September 2001 and is designed to last until at least 2051. It uses a two-letter area code, a two-digit age identifier, and three random letters. The age identifier changes every March and September.
- Format: 2 area letters, 2 age-identifier numbers, 3 random letters
- Age identifiers: March plates use the year (e.g., 24 for 2024), September plates add 50 (e.g., 74 for Sept 2024)
- DVLA Government Stock prices start from £250 (plus £80 DVLA transfer fee)
- Most affordable entry point for personalised plates
- Over 60 million possible combinations

Rules & Regulations
Important legal requirements for personalised number plates in the UK
Vehicle Age Rule
A registration cannot make a vehicle appear newer than it actually is. For example, a '24' plate (March 2024) cannot be assigned to a car first registered in 2020. However, you can always assign an older plate to a newer vehicle. Dateless plates have no year identifier and can go on any vehicle.
Display Standards
Number plates must be displayed in the prescribed format with the correct font, spacing, and colours (white front, yellow rear). Altering, rearranging, or misrepresenting characters is a criminal offence that can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and MOT failure.
Ownership
Technically, you do not 'own' a registration number — it remains the property of the Secretary of State. What you hold is the right to display and use that registration, which can be transferred or sold. This right can be held on a retention certificate if not assigned to a vehicle.
Vehicle Requirements
To have a personalised plate assigned, your vehicle must be registered in the UK, taxed, have a valid MOT (if required), and be available for inspection if requested by the DVLA. Vehicles with Q registrations cannot receive personalised plates.
Retention Certificates
If you don't have a vehicle to assign the plate to, or if you're selling your car, the registration can be held on a V778/V750 retention certificate. This is valid for 10 years and costs £80. It can be renewed free of charge through the DVLA.
